Rivan Deploys World’s First Off-Grid 1MW SNG System

Synthetic fuels hardware manufacturer Rivan Industries has deployed its first commercial-scale 1MW synthetic natural gas (SNG) system at its UK facility, marking the world’s first completely off-grid, autonomous SNG installation.

Following full commissioning, the modular system is projected to produce carbon-neutral synthetic natural gas at costs up to 80% lower than historical industry benchmarks.

The 1MW milestone comes just over two years after Rivan began operations, following a successful 100kW pilot reactor test that achieved grid-spec gas purity (99.7%).

By integrating its systems directly into dedicated off-grid solar arrays, Rivan circumvents traditional grid connection costs and overhead, achieving overall hardware cost reductions up to 11 times lower than standard SNG facilities.

The company plans to deploy 10 additional units at its second facility in 2027, with a broader goal of bringing up to 1 TWh of synthetic fuel capacity online over the next three years.

Vertical Integration Drives Modular Synthetic Fuel Production

Synthetic natural gas serves as a scalable, drop-in replacement for fossil fuels in hard-to-abate heavy industries, such as cement, steel, chemicals, and aviation, where direct electrification remains technically challenging.

Rivan’s system combines water electrolysis, CO2 supply, catalytic reactors, and power management into a vertically integrated, standalone unit powered by renewable electricity.

By manufacturing its modular hardware completely in-house, Rivan leverages rapid iteration cycles and simplified direct-current power architectures to capture low-cost solar energy.

To support its commercial rollout, the company is equipping a 50,000-square-foot manufacturing plant to prepare for mass production and large-scale utility deployment.

Harvey Hodd, founder and CEO of Rivan Industries, highlighted the importance of moving from technical validation to commercial scale.
